BREAKING: Boris Johnson quits
In the fourth major resignation over the course of the last 24 hours, Boris Johnson has resigned as Foreign Secretary.
This follows the resignation of Brexit Secretary David Davis, and two Junior Brexit ministers. Brexiteer opposition to the PM’s Brexit plan is now mounting, and there are reports that the backbench 1922 Committee will soon have sufficient signatures to call a leadership election.
The PM’s office has also cancelled a scheduled meeting with opposition MPs after fury among Tory backbenchers, however the damage may already be done.
A Downing Street spokesperson said:
“This afternoon, the Prime Minister accepted the resignation of Boris Johnson as Foreign Secretary. His replacement will be announced shortly. The Prime Minister thanks Boris for his work.”
Tom Watson MP, Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, said:
“Theresa May’s Government is in meltdown. This is complete and utter chaos.
“The country is at a standstill with a divided and shambolic Government. The Prime Minister can't deliver Brexit and has zero authority left"
