David Davis resigns as Brexit Secretary
David Davis has resigned as secretary of state for exiting the European Union.
Reports suggest that the resignation followed severe disagreements with the government’s Brexit plan, agreed at Chequers this weekend. Brexit Junior ministers Steve Baker and Suella Braverman have also resigned.
Pro-Brexit backbenchers have already begun sending letters of no confidence to the chair of the backbench 1922 Committee. 48 Letters are needed to trigger a Conservative leadership contest.
This is the sixth resignation by a government minister since autumn 2017 - that’s one resignation every six weeks.
Ian Lavery MP, Chair of the Labour Party, commenting on David Davis' resignation, said:
“This is absolute chaos and Theresa May has no authority left.
“The Prime Minister is in office but not in power. She cannot deliver Brexit and our country is at a complete standstill, while the Tories indulge in their leadership tussling.
“We can’t go on like this. Britain needs a functioning Government.”
