Sturgeon backs second EU Ref, with reservations

The First Minister said SNP MPs would vote in favour of another referendum on EU membership, but said Scottish voters must have a veto on the final result.

Sturgeon told the Andrew Marr show that “we would not stand in the way of a second referendum, a so-called people’s vote. SNP MPs would undoubtedly vote for that proposition", but said the result would have to be confirmed by all four of the UK's constituent nations.

“We would of course want to talk to people about how we ensure that Scotland does not end up in the same position all over again, where we voted to remain in the EU but find ourselves facing exit completely against our will.”

Polling by YouGov shows that 79 percent of SNP members are in favour of a second vote on EU membership, but the statement is a sign that the party's leadership is shifting towards attempting to overturn the 2016 referendum.

However, the position does not enjoy overwhelming support among party grandees, with Jim Sillars, the former SNP deputy leader previously arguing that a second EU vote risked "undoing" a hypothetical successful independence vote.

“If that argument is supported by the SNP on Brexit, how would it defend a winning independence referendum against demands for a second one after negotiations?" said Sillars.

“The various actions taken by the SNP to sabotage Brexit are a set of precedents for the losing No side if Yes wins here next time: claims the winners lied, legal action, inventing difficulties, whipping up emotions, obstruction, encouraging the other side in negotiations to be difficult, will all mirror the SNP on Brexit."

Discussion on Brexit is conspicuously absent from the SNP's conference, with no motions on the topic being debated. However, it is likely to dominate much of the party's fringe events, with the SNP Socialists group hosting a joint event with Another Europe is Possible on Tuesday on the topic of "stopping a hard Tory Brexit".
